First Reading - Ephesians 6:10-20
Gospel - Luke 13:31-35
In the first reading, Paul urges the Ephesians to "put on the armor of God." He recognizes that we are in a spiritual battle, facing forces that try to pull us away from God’s path. Paul describes each piece of this armor—the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit—as essential defenses against these challenges. By putting on this armor, we are spiritually equipped to persevere in our calling and resist the temptations or doubts that might weaken our faith. Paul also emphasizes the power of prayer, encouraging us to pray constantly, for it keeps us connected to God and strengthens us in times of weakness.
In the Gospel, we see Jesus facing threats from Herod, who wants to kill Him. Some Pharisees warn Him to leave, yet Jesus stands His ground. His response is firm and fearless: "Go and tell that fox, ‘I will keep driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.’" Jesus knows His mission and refuses to be deterred, even by threats to His life. His journey to Jerusalem is not just a physical journey but also a journey toward the fulfillment of God’s plan. Jesus understands the sacrifices this mission entails, and He accepts them out of love for humanity.
Dear friends, these readings remind us that as followers of Christ, we, too, are called to be resilient in our faith and faithful to our mission. Paul’s imagery of the armor of God calls us to reflect: Are we spiritually prepared? Do we put on the belt of truth, seeking honesty and integrity in our words and actions? Do we carry the shield of faith, trusting in God even when challenges arise? Each piece of this armor helps us withstand the challenges of life, and each piece reminds us of God’s unwavering support.
Jesus’ courage in the face of threats shows us the power of commitment to our mission. He did not allow fear or opposition to divert Him from doing what was right and fulfilling God’s purpose. We are invited to share that same commitment, especially in moments when standing up for our faith or values may not be easy.
Let us pray today for the grace to put on the armor of God, to stay strong in our faith, and to remain faithful to the mission God has entrusted to each of us. May we find courage in Jesus' example and confidence in knowing that God is always with us, guiding us forward even through the most challenging times.
