First Reading - Titus 2:1-8,11-14

Gospel - Luke 17:7-10

We often set goals for various tasks in life. Goals help keep us focused and guide our efforts. But today’s readings remind us that our goals shouldn’t only be reward-focused. Rather, our goals should inspire us to live responsibly, embracing each duty with dedication and integrity.

In the first reading, Paul outlines an approach to teaching through example. He encourages elders—both men and women—to be role models for younger generations. For Paul, words alone are not enough; our lives should be our greatest teaching tool. By living in a way that reflects their values, elders can inspire others to do the same. Paul assures that those who remain committed to this path, living responsibly and with a spirit of service, will be rewarded by Jesus when He returns.

The Gospel passage reinforces this idea of responsible living. Jesus speaks through a parable, contrasting a reward-oriented mindset with one of responsibility. In the story, a servant is expected to complete each task without anticipating extra recognition. Jesus emphasizes that, as disciples, we should approach our responsibilities not merely in expectation of reward but with the humility that this is simply our duty. “We are merely servants; we have done no more than our duty,” Jesus says, urging us to fulfill our roles with a sense of purpose beyond personal gain.

Often, we are inclined to seek recognition or appreciation for what we do. But Jesus invites us to see every task as part of our God-given responsibility. Doing our work faithfully, without expecting rewards, fosters a deeper sense of purpose. This shift in attitude makes our work an act of service and a reflection of our faith.

Paul’s guidance to “teach by example” aligns with this spirit. When we perform our duties with responsibility and integrity, our actions become a living lesson for others. Our lives become a powerful testimony, showing others the value of faithfulness and humility.

Let us commit ourselves to doing every task with wholehearted dedication, knowing that we are called to serve. In doing so, we not only fulfill our own responsibilities but also inspire others to embrace theirs. May our lives reflect a spirit of responsible and loving service.
