First Reading - 2 John 4-9
Gospel - Luke 17:26-37
In the first reading, John captures the essence of Jesus’ message: love. He exhorts believers to be united in love, following Jesus’ instructions. This call to live a life of love is the identity of every believer in Christ. John assures us that faithfully adhering to Jesus’ teachings binds us closely to the Trinity, for the Trine God dwells in those who live by Jesus’ words. Conversely, deviation from His teachings distances us from God. John also cautions believers to be vigilant against those who deny the physical reality of Jesus, equating disbelief in Him with rejection of His teachings. He condemns such beliefs, as they undermine the foundation of faith.
The Gospel passage continues with the theme of the coming of the Son of Man. It underscores two key points about His return. First, it will be unexpected and unavoidable, occurring amidst the ordinary moments of our daily lives. Second, it will be unmistakable, evident as some are taken from the earth. Jesus illustrates this with the imagery of vultures gathering around a corpse, a stark and noticeable sign. This “taking away” signifies a separation between those who believe and those who remain in disbelief or ignorance, evoking the final judgment.
Dear friends, what truly defines a Christian? Is it simply baptism, attending church, or something deeper? Certainly, it is our faithful adherence to the teachings of Jesus. The first reading reminds us that Jesus’ foundational teaching is love, a commandment that distinguishes us as Christians. John further assures us that this faithful adherence leads to eternal happiness. Meanwhile, the Gospel warns us that we cannot ignore or sideline Jesus’ teachings, for living by them prepares us for the end times. Unbelief or ignorance, the Gospel stresses, will not serve as excuses when the Son of Man returns. Though His coming is unforeseen, it is certain, and our task is to remain prepared.
May God enlighten our hearts and minds to know His truth and live by it to the end of our days.
