First Reading - Song of Songs 2:8-14
Gospel - Luke 1:39-45
The first reading from the Song of Songs beautifully portrays the intimacy between lovers. The lover’s passionate desire to see and be with the beloved reflects a profound longing for connection. The imagery of springtime—flowers blooming, birds singing—echoes the renewal and joy that love brings. This poetic expression invites us to see Jesus as the lover of our souls, eagerly desiring to be with us. His invitation is tender and persistent, calling us to open our hearts to Him.
The Gospel, on the other hand, gives us a glimpse of love in action through the visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth. After receiving the angel’s message, Mary does not remain still. Her faith compels her to act, to go out of herself and serve Elizabeth in her need. Mary’s journey to the hill country of Judah is an act of sensitivity—she perceives the needs of another and responds with love and urgency.
Dear friends, as Christmas draws near, these readings offer us valuable insights into how we can prepare ourselves to welcome Jesus. First, the first reading reminds us to cultivate an ardent love for Jesus. Like the lover in the Song of Songs, our hearts should yearn for Him with a deep and active longing. This desire to encounter Jesus will not go unanswered, for He assures us in the book of Revelation, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and dine with them.” Jesus longs to enter our lives, but He awaits our response.
Second, the Gospel reminds us that our preparation must also include sensitivity—love expressed in action. Mary’s example challenges us to look beyond ourselves and perceive the needs of those around us. Sensitivity means being attentive, responsive, and willing to go the extra mile for others, especially those who are struggling. It is through such acts of love that we make the joy of Christmas enduring and meaningful.
As we prepare for Christmas, let us embrace both the longing for Christ and the willingness to serve others. Let our love for Jesus inspire us to be sensitive to the needs of our families, neighbors, and communities. May our preparations not just be external but rooted in hearts transformed by love and sensitivity.
May God fill us with His Spirit, so we can welcome Christ into our hearts and homes, and bring His joy to all we encounter. Let this Christmas be a time of renewed love, deep connection, and acts of sensitivity that reflect the heart of God.
