First Reading - Philippians 3:17-4:1
Gospel - Luke 16:1-8
In the first reading, Paul exhorts the Philippians to remain faithful to the teachings he has imparted to them. He encourages them to hold firm to their faith in Christ, and warns against the examples of those who strayed into idolatry and abandoned their commitment to God. Paul assures the Philippians that their perseverance and fidelity to God’s commands will be rewarded. He holds out the hope of resurrection and heavenly joy, reminding them that staying true to Christ will ultimately lead to glory. Through Paul’s words, we are encouraged to treasure our relationship with God and see each moment as an opportunity to deepen our faith.
The Gospel presents the parable of the dishonest steward. This story, at first glance, seems unusual, as Jesus appears to praise the steward’s shrewdness, despite his dishonesty. However, Jesus is not commending the steward’s dishonesty but rather his cleverness and foresight in using a small window of opportunity to prepare for his future. The steward realizes he has a short time to act before he loses his job, so he uses that time wisely to win the goodwill of his master’s debtors. Jesus uses this example to teach us the importance of prudence and initiative, especially in managing the gifts we have—our time, talents, and resources—for a greater purpose.
These readings remind us of the power of small, everyday choices. Paul’s exhortation to the Philippians invites us to make use of our opportunity to know and serve God, recognizing that each moment can draw us closer to Him. The parable of the steward shows us that even in brief or challenging situations, we can act wisely and purposefully. The steward took advantage of a small opportunity to secure a better future for himself, and in a similar way, we are called to make use of our time and resources to serve God and others, building relationships of goodwill and compassion.
Dear friends, each small opportunity is a chance to live out our faith in a meaningful way. As Mother Teresa often reminded us, “Do little things with great love.” Let us handle the small moments of life with care, for our future in God’s kingdom depends on how we use these seemingly insignificant opportunities here on earth. May we, with each act of faithfulness, draw closer to God and grow in our capacity to serve Him and one another.
