First Reading - 1 John 2:18-21

Gospel - John 1:1-18

Today marks the final day of the year, a moment to reflect on the journey we’ve undertaken. This past year has undoubtedly brought a mix of joys, challenges, and lessons. As we stand at the threshold of a new year, the readings invite us to pause and evaluate our lives in the light of faith. Have we grown deeper in our relationship with God? Have we remained steadfast in our faith, or have we allowed the world’s distractions to weaken our resolve?

In the first reading, St. John addresses the concept of the "Antichrist," describing those who abandon the community and deny Jesus Christ. These individuals act as forces of deception, attempting to lead others astray. John cautions believers to stay vigilant against such false teachers while reminding them of their anointing by the Holy One. This anointing provides them with discernment, enabling them to distinguish truth from falsehood. He encourages the community to continue standing firm in their faith and knowledge of Jesus Christ.

The Gospel presents the prologue from St. John, a profound theological declaration. It affirms that Jesus is the eternal Word, fully divine, who became man to bring salvation to humanity. However, not all recognized or accepted Him. While some rejected the light and grace He offered, those who received Him were gifted with the power to become children of God. The prologue also emphasizes John the Baptist's role in preparing the way for Jesus and clarifying that he was not the Messiah. Yet, many failed to recognize the true Messiah in Jesus, missing the grace of salvation.

Dear friends, as we prepare to welcome a new year, we are called to reflect deeply: Have we truly recognized Jesus as our Messiah, the one who directs and saves our lives? Have we embraced the grace He offers, or have we taken it for granted? This moment calls for a renewed resolution—to remain steadfast in imitating Jesus and living out His teachings with faith and commitment.

The first reading reassures us that we are anointed by the Holy One, graced with the ability to discern truth from lies. Yet, the world we live in is both alluring and deceptive. At times, we may find ourselves drawn to the fleeting glamour of worldly distractions. This is an opportunity to recommit to the truth we have received in Jesus. By standing firm in His grace, we can resist the false prophets and deceptive forces that attempt to lead us astray.

As we bid farewell to this year and step into the next, let us carry the teachings of Jesus as our armor against the challenges ahead. May His grace guide us to grow in faith, recognize the eternal over the temporary, and deepen our relationship with Him. May this new year bring renewed strength and unwavering trust in the light and truth of Christ. Amen.
