SOLEMNITY OF MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD

First Reading - Numbers 6:22-27

Second Reading - Galatians 4:4-7

Gospel - Luke 2:16-28

As we begin a new year, we naturally look for blessings, hope, and new opportunities. It is a time of fresh beginnings and renewed resolutions. Today’s readings, on this Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, provide us with a powerful reminder of where true blessings come from and how we are called to live in this new year—with Mary as our model of faith and trust.

The first reading from the Book of Numbers contains one of the most beautiful blessings in Scripture. God instructs Moses to tell Aaron and his sons to bless the people of Israel with the priestly blessing: “The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord let his face shine upon you and be gracious to you.” This blessing is not just for the Israelites of old but for us as well. It reassures us of God’s unwavering love, protection, and guidance as we step into a new year, uncertain of what it holds.
In the second reading, St. Paul reminds us of our identity in Christ. Through the birth of Jesus, born of a woman, we are no longer slaves but children of God and heirs to His promises. This profound truth transforms our perspective on life. It invites us to approach the year ahead not with fear or anxiety but with confidence in our status as beloved children of God.
The Gospel brings us to the heart of the Christmas story. The shepherds, having heard the angelic announcement, hurry to Bethlehem to find Mary, Joseph, and the child lying in a manger. Their response is one of joyful proclamation as they share what they have seen and heard. But Mary’s response is different—she treasures all these things and ponders them in her heart. Mary teaches us the importance of contemplation, of pausing to reflect on God’s work in our lives and responding with faith and trust, even when the future is unclear.
Dear friends, as we step into this new year, the readings invite us to draw practical insights for our journey ahead. Seek God’s blessings daily. Like the Israelites, we are called to live under the blessing of God. Begin and end each day by invoking His blessings and trusting in His providence. Carry the words of the priestly blessing in your heart as a reminder that God’s face shines upon you, guiding and protecting you.
Embrace your identity as God’s children. Let us live as heirs of God’s promises. This means embracing our identity with confidence and living out our calling to reflect His love, mercy, and grace to others. Resolve to deepen your relationship with God through prayer, Scripture, and the sacraments.
Proclaim the good news. Like the shepherds, share the joy of Christ’s presence in your life. This might mean being a source of hope and encouragement to others or finding ways to spread kindness and compassion in your community.
Ponder and trust like Mary. Make time for reflection amidst the busyness of life. Seek God’s will in all things and trust in His plan, even when the road seems uncertain. Like Mary, treasure the moments of God’s grace in your life and let them strengthen your faith.
As we celebrate Mary, the Holy Mother of God, let us entrust this new year to her intercession. May she guide us in our journey of faith and help us grow closer to her Son, Jesus Christ. With hearts full of hope and gratitude, let us step into this year with confidence, knowing that God is with us, blessing and keeping us every step of the way.
