First Reading - 1 John 3:7-10
Gospel - John 1:35-42
In the first reading, John warns believers about the dangers of being led astray. He cautions against false teachers who attempt to deceive with doctrines that condone sin or even make it seem virtuous. John emphasizes that as children of God, we are called to live lives marked by righteousness. To achieve this, believers must break the chains of sin, as sin is incompatible with the identity of God's children. Jesus, who destroyed the works of the devil, is the perfect example of righteousness and purity. As followers of Christ, we are invited to emulate His life and embody the marks of God in our daily lives.
The gospel narrates the transformative encounter of two disciples with Jesus. Initially followers of John the Baptist, they shift their allegiance to Jesus upon John’s testimony. Their journey of faith unfolds gradually—they begin by seeking to know Jesus, accept His invitation to stay with Him, and through this, discover Him as the true Messiah. This encounter does not end with their own conviction; it inspires them to bring others to Jesus. The journey of these disciples is a testament to perseverance, faith, and the joy of discovering one’s true purpose.
Dear friends, life itself is a journey of discovery. It is essential for us to ask: What are we seeking in life? Like the two disciples, we must persevere in our quest under the guidance of Jesus. By staying close to Him, we too can discover the deeper meaning and purpose of our existence.
The first reading reminds us of the hurdles and distractions that can derail our search. These challenges may discourage us from persevering in our journey. Yet, when we take Jesus as our model, we find the strength to overcome these obstacles. Jesus Himself faced numerous trials but remained steadfast and faithful to His mission. By imitating His example, we can navigate life’s challenges and remain focused on our ultimate purpose.
Let us strive to make Jesus the center of our lives, imitating His love, righteousness, and perseverance. In doing so, we will not only discover the true purpose of our lives but also inspire others to walk the path of faith and fulfillment.
