FEAST OF ST. ANDREW
First Reading - Romans 10:9-18
Gospel - Matthew 4:18-22
The first reading unravels the mystery of the origin of faith. It upholds that faith is rooted in Christ. Christ is the foundation of our faith. The Scripture is the Word of Christ and those who enflesh the Word of Christ are the envoys or the messengers of Christ. Thus, the messengers are the special ones chosen and appointed by Christ. They transmit faith through their preaching of the scripture. They believe with their heart and confess with their lips by their preaching and their own life. Thus, it is imperative to express faith that we have received. We believe with our heart but we must be able to confess with our lips that is a sure sign of salvation in Christ. Faith without expression in life is shallow but faith in action is the hope of salvation.
The gospel presents to us the call of Peter and Andrew. They were called to faith in Christ and they obeyed Him by leaving their job behind. They nurtured their faith by being with Christ and shared with others the same faith in Christ as fishers of men for Christ.
My dear friends, we are bestowed on with the gift of faith in baptism. We are blessed with the Sacraments to nurture it to the full. We are guided by the word of God to keep it alive till the end of our life and as followers of Christ commissioned to confess with our lips our faith in Christ and live this in our lives. Faith without action is inertia but faith in action is the vision and mission of Christ. Let this vision and mission of Christ ever burn in our hearts.
