First Reading - Galatians 3:22-29

Gospel - Luke 11:27-28

We have many types of relationships in our lives; some are casual, and others are intimate and close. Casual relationships do not last long, but close relationships certainly do. These close bonds usually occur within the family or among like-minded people. Today's readings invite us to establish a close bond with God, like being part of His family.

The first reading emphasizes the importance of faith in binding everyone into equal membership in Christ. Paul continues to argue that it is not the law that unites all members, but faith in Christ. Through baptism in Jesus, all people are united into one family, regardless of caste, race, or group.

The Gospel presents an interesting scene filled with insights. A woman acknowledges the greatness of the mother of Jesus after witnessing the healing of the mute man and the ensuing controversy. However, Jesus responds differently. He not only acknowledges Mary's role as His biological mother but exalts her as someone who heard the word of God, kept it, and lived by it. Jesus teaches the woman and the audience that Mary is blessed not simply because she bore Him, but because she listened to God's word and treasured it in her heart. This invitation extends to everyone who follows Jesus and listens to His words, offering them the opportunity to share in a close relationship with Him, like family.

Dear friends, just as we acknowledge and love our earthly families, God invites us to join His family by hearing His word and living according to it. In the Gospel, Jesus sets the Blessed Mother as an example for us to follow in order to become part of His family.

The first reading reminds us that through our baptism, we are one family in Christ. However, we are also called to live lives shaped by the demands of this faith.

May God help us become part of His family by hearing and living the word of God.
