First Reading - Ecclesiasticus 2:1-11

Gospel - Mark 9:30-37

Life presents us with trials, challenges, and moments of uncertainty. At times, we may wonder why we experience suffering, why we face rejection, or why our efforts seem to go unnoticed. In these moments, today’s readings offer us a powerful message—trust in God, endure trials with patience, and embrace humility as the path to greatness.

The first reading reminds us that when we choose to serve the Lord, we must be prepared for trials. Faith is not an escape from difficulties but a call to remain steadfast in the face of hardship. Just as gold is tested in fire, so too are we purified through challenges. But the reading also assures us that God is compassionate and never abandons those who trust in Him. We are called to be patient, to cling to God, and to place our full confidence in His mercy.

In the Gospel, Jesus speaks again about His coming suffering, but the disciples do not understand. Instead, they begin to argue about who among them is the greatest. Jesus responds with a lesson that goes against worldly expectations—true greatness is found in humility and service. He places a child in their midst, teaching them that to be great in God’s kingdom, they must become like little children, embracing simplicity, trust, and dependence on God.

This message is deeply relevant to us. We often seek recognition, status, and personal success, but Jesus invites us to take a different path—the path of humility, service, and selflessness. True greatness is not about power or prestige but about how we treat others, especially the weak, the vulnerable, and those in need.

How do we respond to trials in our lives? Do we remain faithful, trusting in God’s plan, or do we give in to fear and doubt? And in our daily interactions, do we seek to serve or to be served? Today’s readings remind us that God never abandons us in our struggles. He strengthens those who remain faithful and calls us to walk in humility, putting others before ourselves.

Let us ask the Lord for the grace to endure difficulties with faith, to seek true greatness through humility, and to place our trust entirely in His loving care.
