First Reading - Ecclesiasticus 6:5-17

Gospel - Mark 10:1-12

Friendship and commitment are two fundamental aspects of life that shape our relationships with others and with God. Today’s readings invite us to reflect on the value of true friendship and the depth of commitment, especially in relationships that require faithfulness and love.

The first reading speaks beautifully about friendship, emphasizing that a faithful friend is a treasure, a gift from God. Not all friendships are genuine; some are temporary, based on convenience, and can vanish in times of trouble. But true friendship is tested through challenges and remains strong. Such a friend is like a “sturdy shelter” and “a life-saving remedy.” The reading reminds us that authentic friendships require trust, loyalty, and perseverance. These qualities also apply to our relationship with God, who is the most faithful friend we can ever have.

In the Gospel, Jesus addresses the topic of marriage and commitment. The Pharisees question Him about divorce, seeking to test Him. In response, Jesus reminds them of God’s original plan for marriage—a lifelong union of love and fidelity. He points to the beauty of the bond between a husband and wife, emphasizing that what God has joined, no human being should separate. This teaching challenges the mindset of treating relationships as temporary or easily disposable.

Both readings call us to value and nurture the relationships in our lives. Whether in friendships or in marriage, faithfulness, patience, and love are necessary. In a world where commitments are often broken and relationships are taken lightly, Jesus invites us to a higher standard—one of faithfulness, sacrifice, and self-giving love.

Today, we are called to examine our relationships. Are we faithful in our friendships? Do we value commitment in our relationships, especially in marriage and family life? Above all, do we remain faithful to God, the truest and most steadfast friend? Let us pray for the grace to be people of integrity, loyalty, and love in all our relationships, reflecting the faithfulness that God shows us every day.
