FEAST OF ST. MATTHIAS
First Reading - Acts 1:15-17,20-26
Gospel - John 15:9-17
In the first reading, we witness the selection of Matthias as a replacement for Judas Iscariot. The apostles seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in this decision, and it is under that divine direction that Matthias is chosen. This event reminds us that discipleship is not a matter of personal ambition or qualification—it is a response to God's initiative. God calls, and we are invited to respond with openness and faithfulness.
In the Gospel, Jesus speaks to his disciples during the Last Supper. He reminds them that they did not choose him—he chose them. This choosing comes with a mission. First, to love one another as he has loved us—unconditionally, forgivingly, and sacrificially. Second, to bear lasting fruit—fruits of the Spirit in our lives. Third, to trust in prayer, asking the Father in Jesus’ name for what we truly need.
Dear friends, to remain faithful to our calling as disciples of Jesus, we are invited to abide in his love and friendship. We do this by embracing the characteristics of true friendship with Christ:
– Trusting him through prayer and the Word of God.
– Being faithful by doing his will even when it challenges us.
– Living in mutual love, recognizing our dignity as friends and not just servants.
– Practicing forgiveness toward those who wrong us.
– Rejoicing in the gift of divine friendship that brings lasting joy.
– And above all, loving others with self-sacrifice, as Jesus has loved us.
True discipleship leads us to become persons for others—giving our time, talents, and lives in service, just as Jesus gave his life for us. His love is our example, and his call is our mission.
May we have the grace to respond to his call with faith, joy, and generosity.
