First Reading - 2 Corinthians 1:18-22

Gospel - Matthew 5:13-16

The readings of today remind us of our Christian identity and mission in the world. As followers of Christ, we are marked by God's Spirit and sent to bring light, flavour, and hope into the world.

In the first reading, Paul speaks about the faithfulness of God. He reminds the Corinthian community that God’s promises are not uncertain or changing. In Christ, all of God’s promises are a firm and definitive “Yes.” Paul further explains that God has anointed us, sealed us, and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. This sealing with the Spirit marks us as belonging to God and sends us to live with integrity and purpose. Our lives, therefore, should reflect the unchanging faithfulness of God.

The gospel highlights this identity and mission through two powerful images: salt and light. Jesus tells his disciples that they are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Salt gives flavour and preserves; it becomes useless when it loses its taste. Light is meant to shine and not be hidden. These images challenge us to live in such a way that we make a difference in the world around us.

To be salt means to live lives of integrity, truth, and love that give flavour to the lives of others. It also means resisting moral decay by being a witness to God's values in a world that often forgets them.

To be light means to illuminate the darkness around us—not by our own power, but by reflecting the light of Christ through our words, choices, and actions. Jesus says that our good works should shine before others so that they may give glory to the Father in heaven.

Dear friends, we are sealed with the Spirit and called to live out our faith in practical and visible ways. The world needs the taste of genuine love and the light of hope and truth. If we remain connected to Christ and faithful to his word, we will fulfil this mission.

Let us ask for the grace to remain faithful to our identity as God's people and to be salt and light in the places and situations where we live. May our lives bear witness to the faithfulness of God.
