First Reading - 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8

Gospel - Mark 6:17-29

Every age presents us with a choice: to live by the standards of the world or to remain faithful to the call of God, even when it is difficult. Today’s readings place before us this very tension, reminding us that holiness is not an option but a way of life, and that faithfulness to God may come at a cost.

In the first reading, Paul exhorts the Thessalonians to live in a way that pleases God, urging them toward holiness and purity. He makes it clear that this is not merely human advice but God’s will—that we are set apart, not for impurity or compromise, but for sanctity. The Christian vocation is not simply about avoiding sin but about actively reflecting God’s holiness in our choices, our relationships, and our daily lives.

The Gospel presents us with the figure of John the Baptist, a man who lived out this radical fidelity to God’s truth. John spoke boldly against Herod’s unlawful relationship, even though it meant putting his life in danger. In the end, his courage cost him his life. Yet, though silenced by the sword, John’s witness to truth still speaks powerfully today. He reminds us that true discipleship sometimes requires standing firm when the world would rather silence or compromise the voice of God.

Dear friends, the readings challenge us: Are we living to please God, or are we swayed by the approval of the world? Holiness is not about perfection but about the daily choice to walk in God’s truth, to guard our hearts, and to be courageous in witnessing to what is right.

May we, like John the Baptist, remain steadfast and fearless, and like the Thessalonians, strive each day to grow in holiness. For in living this way, we not only please God but also become light in a world that desperately needs the courage of truth and the witness of holiness.
