First Reading - Zechariah 8:20-23
Gospel - Luke 9:51-56
One of the greatest desires of the human heart is to find where true strength and guidance lie. Some people look for it in power, others in wealth, and still others in influence. But today’s readings remind us that the real strength that draws people together and transforms lives comes from the presence of God and the spirit of His love.
In the first reading, Zechariah gives us a powerful image: people from every nation and language will grasp the hand of a Jew, saying, “Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.” What attracts them is not power or riches but the unmistakable presence of God among His people. When God is with us, we become a light that others are drawn to.
In the Gospel, however, the disciples of Jesus show another spirit — one of anger and retaliation. When a Samaritan village refuses to welcome Jesus, they are quick to suggest calling down fire from heaven. But Jesus firmly rebukes them. His mission is not about destruction but about salvation, not about forcing others to believe but about inviting them into the love of God.
Dear friends, God’s presence is revealed not in power or retaliation, but in mercy, patience, and love. If we truly live in God’s presence, our lives will attract others — not because we overpower them, but because they see in us the peace and compassion of Christ.
Practically, this challenges us. When we face rejection, misunderstanding, or opposition, do we respond with anger and harshness, or with patience and mercy? When people look at us, do they see someone who carries grudges, or someone who reflects the heart of Christ?
the world is hungry to see authentic witnesses of God’s presence. We don’t need to call down fire; we need to shine with His light. Like the people in Zechariah’s vision, others will be drawn to us when they can say: “God is truly with them.”
May our words, actions, and attitudes become a living invitation for others to discover God’s presence in us. Let us not be people of anger or retaliation, but people of peace, mercy, and love — for that is where true strength and true witness lie.
