First Reading - Jeremiah 31:1-7

There is a saying: "The darkest hour is often just before dawn." When we face difficulties, our first temptation is to give up—to stop praying, to lose hope, or to think that God is no longer listening. Yet today's readings remind us that God never forgets His people, and that persistent faith is always rewarded.
In the first reading, the prophet Jeremiah speaks to a people living in exile. They have lost their homeland, their temple, and their hope. It seems as though God has abandoned them. But through Jeremiah, the Lord speaks words of consolation: "I have loved you with an everlasting love... I will gather you from the ends of the earth." God assures His people that their suffering is not the end of the story. He remains faithful to His covenant and promises to restore them with joy.
The Gospel gives us a living example of that hope. A Canaanite woman comes to Jesus, pleading for her daughter's healing. At first, Jesus seems to ignore her. Then His words appear to discourage her. But she refuses to walk away. She does not argue, complain, or lose faith. Instead, with remarkable humility she says, "Lord, even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from their master's table."
Her faith is extraordinary because it is humble, patient, and persistent. She trusts not in her own merits but in the mercy of Jesus. And Jesus responds with admiration: "Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." Her daughter is healed that very moment.
Dear friends, God's mercy is greater than every barrier, and faith never gives up. There will be moments when God seems silent, when our prayers appear unanswered, or when His timing does not match our expectations. Those are the moments when faith matures. Like the Canaanite woman, we are called to keep trusting, knowing that God always hears the prayers of a humble heart.
Let us ask ourselves: Do I continue to trust God when He seems silent? Do I persevere in prayer even when answers are delayed?
May the faith of the Canaanite woman inspire us never to lose hope. And may the God who promised to gather and restore His people strengthen us to trust Him in every circumstance, confident that His love is everlasting and His mercy never fails.
