💖 HOMILY - AUGUST 7 💖

First Reading - Nahum 2:1,3,3:1-3,6-7

Gospel - Matthew 16:24-28

Every day we make choices. Some are small and ordinary, while others shape the direction of our lives. Behind every choice lies a deeper question: What is most important to me? What am I really living for?

In the first reading, the prophet Nahum announces the fall of Nineveh, a powerful city filled with violence, pride, and injustice. It seemed invincible, but its power did not last. The message is clear: everything built on pride and selfishness eventually crumbles. Wealth, power, and popularity may seem impressive for a time, but they cannot endure without God.

The Gospel presents a completely different way of living. Jesus says, "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me." These words are not an invitation to seek suffering, but to choose love over selfishness, service over comfort, and God's will over our own.

Then Jesus asks a question that every Christian should ponder: "What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world but forfeits his life?" We can spend our lives chasing success, possessions, or recognition, yet still miss what matters most—a living relationship with Christ.

The paradox of the Gospel is that we truly find life only when we are willing to give it away. Every act of forgiveness, every sacrifice made out of love, every faithful decision, and every cross carried with Christ brings us closer to the life that never ends.

Let us ask ourselves: What am I living for? What do I value most? Are my daily choices leading me closer to Christ, or only to temporary success?

May the Lord give us the wisdom to choose what lasts forever. May we have the courage to take up our cross each day with love, trusting that whoever loses his life for Christ will truly find it.
