💖 HOMILY - MAY 23 💖

First Reading - Acts 15:22-31

Gospel - John 15:12-17

The readings today remind us that our Christian life is rooted in love—love that unites, liberates, and elevates us into friendship with Christ.

In the first reading, we see the outcome of the Council of Jerusalem. A letter is sent to the Gentile believers to clarify that they are not burdened by the Mosaic Law, especially circumcision. The apostles and elders, guided by the Holy Spirit, choose not to impose unnecessary demands but instead to encourage unity and peace in the growing Church. The message brings joy and consolation to the Gentiles, affirming that faith in Jesus Christ is what truly matters.

In the Gospel, Jesus gives a direct and beautiful command: “Love one another as I have loved you.” His love is not abstract; it is a love that lays down its life for others. Then, Jesus elevates his disciples from servants to friends. A servant follows orders, but a friend shares the heart of the master. Jesus shares with us everything He has received from the Father, and He chooses us—not because of our merit, but out of love—to go and bear lasting fruit.

Dear friends, these readings speak to the heart of our vocation as Christians. We are chosen by Christ to be His friends, and that friendship demands love—concrete, self-giving love that seeks the good of others. Like the early Church, we are also called to remove unnecessary burdens from one another, not to complicate faith with rules, but to make space for the Spirit and for love.

Let us ask ourselves today: Do I love others with the sacrificial love of Christ? Am I willing to let go of rigid attitudes or judgments that may burden others in their faith journey? True Christian friendship with Christ calls us to become sources of joy, encouragement, and unity.

May we live as chosen friends of Christ, bearing the fruit of love in our lives, and leading others to the joy of the Gospel.
