Gospel - John 14:23-29

We all long for a sense of belonging—for a place where we are loved, accepted, and at peace. In today’s world, where we are constantly surrounded by noise, stress, and the pressure to perform, that longing becomes even more real. Today’s readings speak to this deep desire in our hearts. They remind us that the home we are searching for is not just a place—it is a relationship with God. It is a life where God is not only someone we believe in, but someone we welcome into our hearts every day.
In the Gospel, Jesus makes an extraordinary promise: “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we shall come to him and make our home with him.” Think about that. God doesn’t just want to be near us—He wants to live in us. He wants our lives to become His dwelling place. But there’s a condition: love and obedience. When we choose to love God and live by His word—not just when it's easy, but also when it's hard—we create space in our hearts for Him. That is how God makes His home in us.
Jesus also speaks of peace: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.” This is not the kind of peace that comes from a quiet day or a solved problem. It’s deeper. It's the kind of peace that stays with you even when life is uncertain, when plans fail, or when your heart is hurting. It's a peace that tells you, “You are not alone. God is with you. He’s in control. Keep going.” This is the peace that helped the disciples face persecution. It is the same peace we need today—to face challenges in our families, pressures in our jobs, worries about the future.
In the first reading, the early Church faced a moment of confusion. There was disagreement and tension. But instead of panicking, the apostles turned to the Holy Spirit. They prayed, they listened, and they acted together. Their words are powerful: “It has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us.” This is how God guides His people—through prayerful listening, through unity, through humility. How often do we face tough situations and try to fix everything on our own? Today, we’re reminded to stop, pray, and listen. God is still speaking. The Spirit still guides. We are not alone.
In the second reading, we are given a glimpse of our final destination: a heavenly city where God is the light. That’s what we’re moving toward. But we don’t have to wait until heaven to begin living in the light. When we live with God in our hearts now, when we make our homes places of prayer, kindness, and forgiveness, we begin to taste heaven on earth. Each time we choose to love, to forgive, to trust, to hope—we make room for God. We become His home.
So what does this mean for us today? It means we don’t need to be perfect to welcome God—we just need to be willing. We don’t need to have all the answers—we just need to listen. We don’t need to hide our struggles—we need to bring them to God. He is ready to make His home in us. Let’s give Him the key.
Let us go from here with one prayer in our hearts: “Lord, dwell in me. Be my peace. Be my strength. Help me to live your word today.” Because when God makes His home in us, no matter what life throws at us, we will never be lost—we will always be home.
