First Reading - Genesis 46:1-7,28-30
Gospel - Matthew 10:16-23
In the first reading from Genesis, we see Jacob preparing to go down to Egypt to meet his son Joseph. This is not just a journey to see his beloved son; it is also a decisive migration of the entire family to a foreign land. Jacob is naturally anxious. But God reassures him in a vision, “Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt… I will go down with you and I will bring you back.” These words reveal God’s abiding presence and His faithfulness to His promises. Jacob responds with trust, and his reunion with Joseph becomes a moment of deep emotional healing and joy.
In the Gospel, Jesus speaks plainly to His disciples about the challenges they will face as they go out to proclaim the kingdom: persecution, rejection, even hatred. He does not sugarcoat the reality of mission. Yet, He encourages them: “Do not worry about how you are to speak… the Spirit of your Father will be speaking through you.” Just as God assured Jacob of His presence, Jesus assures the disciples that they are never alone. Even in times of trial, God’s Spirit will guide and strengthen them.
Dear friends, today we are reminded that the life of faith is not free from struggle. Whether it is moving into unfamiliar circumstances like Jacob, or facing rejection for the Gospel like the apostles, the Christian journey demands courage and trust. But we are never abandoned. God goes with us. His Spirit speaks through us.
In our own lives, we may face moments when we are afraid to make difficult decisions, to speak the truth, or to live our faith openly. In those moments, let us recall God’s promise: “Do not be afraid. I am with you.”
May we have the courage of Jacob to move forward in trust, and the boldness of the apostles to witness to Christ even in adversity. Let us always rely on the Spirit to be our strength and guide.
